Mr Atkinson qualified in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh in July 1998, became Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2006, and completed his Specialist Registrar training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Imperial College North West Thames rotation in July 2008.
He is Fellowship trained in Sports Medicine surgery, Hip and Knee Replacement and Revision surgery, Arthroscopy, Meniscal and Ligament reconstruction, Foot and Ankle surgery, and Ankle replacement surgery, and spent twelve months at SportsMed in Adelaide, 6 months at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, and had a four month trauma Fellowship in Belgrade.
Mr Atkinson was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at North Middlesex University Hospital in September 2009. He was the hospital’s Trauma Director between 2009 and 2012, and is Clinical Lead for Enhanced Recovery. He was awarded an NHS Clinical Excellence Award in May 2012.
Mr Atkinson was raised in Hampstead Garden Suburb and lives in North London with his wife and young family. He was educated at Christ’s College School, Finchley and then Westminster School, London.
